The main MuleSoft alternatives for Salesforce integration are Boomi, Workato, Celigo, Jitterbit, and SnapLogic among the iPaaS platforms, plus Zapier at the lightweight end and native Salesforce integration apps at the other. Which fits depends on how many systems are involved and who is going to maintain it.
The prior question, which gets skipped, is whether you need middleware at all.
Why people look for alternatives
MuleSoft prices on vCores, a measure of compute, which makes costs hard to forecast when API traffic grows. Industry write-ups put first-year total cost for mid-market deployments at two to three times the base subscription once implementation and specialist staffing are counted, with dedicated MuleSoft developers commanding salaries to match.
It also gets chosen for the wrong reason. MuleSoft is owned by Salesforce, so it turns up on the shortlist by association rather than because the integration needs an enterprise service bus. For a two-system integration that is an expensive default.
The platforms
Boomi is the usual answer for large enterprises with hybrid estates. Its Atom architecture runs integrations in the cloud or behind your firewall, which makes connecting to on-premises ERP systems like SAP or Oracle manageable. Pick it when on-premises connectivity is a real requirement rather than a hypothetical one.
Workato sits in the self-service iPaaS category, aimed at teams who want to build integrations without a dedicated integration engineering function.
Celigo focuses on prebuilt integration templates between common SaaS applications, which shortens the build when your systems are on its list.
Jitterbit and SnapLogic are both established general purpose iPaaS platforms covering similar ground with different tooling and pricing.
Zapier is the lightweight end: fast to set up, good for non-technical teams connecting SaaS tools, and not built for high volume or complex error handling. Useful for automating a notification, wrong for syncing your order book.
The comparison that actually matters
Not feature lists. Three questions.
How many systems are involved? Two systems do not need an integration platform. Five systems with transformation between them do, and that is what these products are for.
Who maintains it after launch? A platform requiring a specialist means a hiring or contracting commitment, not just a licence. This is where MuleSoft costs surprise people, and it applies to the alternatives in proportion to their complexity.
Where does the data go? Middleware means your Salesforce data passes through a third party platform. That is often fine and sometimes a compliance conversation, and it is better to have it early.
The option of not buying middleware
If Salesforce is on one end of every integration you have, an integration platform is the wrong shape. You are paying to host, secure, and staff a general purpose system to do a specific job.

Genuinely complex enterprise orchestration with the budget and staff for it: MuleSoft is a serious product and this is the case it is built for.
Light automation between SaaS tools, low volume: Zapier.
What to check before signing
Ask how pricing changes as volume grows, and get the answer in writing. Consumption-based models are where budget surprises live.
Ask what happens when an integration fails at 2am. Retry behaviour, alerting, and whether a non-specialist can diagnose it are worth more than the connector count.
Ask who builds the second integration. If the answer is the same consultancy that built the first one, that is the real cost of ownership.
